Eastern Hokkaido, which is within the sphere of influence of Kushiro Port, is one of Japan's major food-producing centers,
supplying primary products to such industries as dairy farming, dry field farming and fisheries.
In dairy farming, Approximately 30% of Japan's dairy cattle and 10% of beef cattle are bred here. The amount of milk produced
in this area accounts for approximately 30% of the nation's total. Loaded on a ship for exclusive use, this milk is delivered
daily to the Kanto area via Hitachi Port.

The cultivated acreage for dry field farming in eastern Hokkaido accounts for approximately 20% of the nation's total.
Taking advantage of the cool climate, farmers extensively grow beets, potatoes, wheat and beans, with high yields for all of them.
For 13 years, Kushiro Port was tanked No.1 in Japan in catch of fish. Besides Kushiro Port, the Kushiro area abounds with fishing
ports which enjoy good fishing grounds for both coastal and offshore fisheries. As marine products are also imported from Russia
and the United States via Kushiro Port, fishing boats and freighters frequently enter the port. Many fishery processing companies
which boat cutting-edge technologies are concentrated in the area. Both fresh and processed marine products are shipped nationwide
from this area.
The coal industry is another mainstay industry in Kushiro. Approximately 50% of Japan's coal is produced in this area.
In the paper manufacturing industry, Approximately 10% of the nation's newsprint is produced here.
Corrugated cardboard is also manufactured. All of these products are shipped nationwide.

The influential zone of Kushiro port covers the area within 150 kilometer and the port handles about
90% of the total volume of seaborne cargo generated in eastern Hokkaido. The port is accessed by existing trunk oads.
In addition,a network of expressways and high-grade roads are planned.
A 25-minute drive brings you to Kushiro Airport, where airlines serve nine domestic destinations.
K
ushiro port is much nearer to North America than any other domestic port, and is in close proximity to the Russian Far East
and other northern regions.
Despite its high latitude, the port remains unfrozen even during winter. All of this gives it great potential to grow as the
gateway to the North and the Pacific Rim.
