Kushiro Port & Harbor Project Plan

To deal with ever-increasing cargo volume and vessel size, Kushiro port is implementing facility improvement programs whose target year is 2008. Deeper quaywalls and new wharves designed for 50000-ton cargo vessels will be constructed for speedier, lower-cost service, to help local businesses grow further.

The construction of two additional wharves, the fourth and fifth,at the west port will bring the number of three 14-meter-deep berths for panamax ships to total. Of these three, one will open in 2002. Large berths, including
12-meter-deep ones, thus will increase to 11 form the current five.

Other areas for focus in the future include the construction of earthquake-resistant quays that will function even after disasters, redevelopment of old wharves, and port promotion with a commenty access and environmental protection.
